Who Are We?

The Indigenous Solidarity Coalition @ Brock is dedicated to providing people in the Brock community the opportunity to engage in events that raise awareness and foster activism surrounding Indigenous issues. Through our work we aim to create a more inclusive and respectful environment toward Indigenous Peoples on campus and the surrounding region. From this standpoint we recognize the importance of bringing attention to, and actively engaging in, efforts to eradicate systemic discrimination against Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

We are an open group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous workers, students and community members coming from multiple contexts. We stand together in solidarity alongside Indigenous communities and support the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada – we are committed to the understanding that reconciliation is a conscientious and active process.

Our fall 2015 events for raising awareness and building community included:
– Faceless Dolls Project: Missing and Murdered Aboriginal women and girls
– Sisters in Spirit Vigil
– Art of Resistance Tour and the Beehive Collective
– The Blanket Exercise: Indigenous Rights History we’ve never been taught!
– Non-violent direct action training
– Film Screening: Residential School System

Upcoming events for winter 2016 include:

-Racism in Mainstream Media workshop
(Monday Feb 1st @ 6pm in Sankey Chambers, Brock University)

– Indigenous Self-Determination & Animal Liberation -Working Together! (Tuesday March 1st @ 6pm in Sankey Chambers, Brock University)

– Sixties Scoop Panel Event – Learning from Indigenous Children Adoptees (Friday March 11th @6:30pm in Sean O’Sullivan Theatre, Brock University) – refreshments before event beginning at 5:30pm

This coalition is open to everyone at Brock (students and workers) as well as members of the surrounding community. You do not need to be a CUPE 4207 member to join our group.

In the spirit of the diverse perspectives of collaborative organizing, we come together each with an equal voice to work toward decolonization and social justice for Indigenous Peoples. In keeping with the policies and practices established by CUPE National Aboriginal Council, we work on a consensus building model, a culturally appropriate approach to decision making and governance.
